What is the Digital Television Transition?

The digital television transition is the gradual switch from the old style analog television signals to the newer digital television signals.

Back in the late 1990's Congress passed a law stating that in February of 2009 all full-power television stations in the U.S.A would be required to switch to a fully digital television signal. This means that these stations will no longer broadcast simultaneously in both digital and analog but will now broadcast in only digital.

So what? No more analog TV signals... What the big deal with that?

The big deal is that millions and millions of Americans TVs will go fuzzy on February 17th, 2009 because they are not equipped to run off of digital TV signals. For anyone that bought a TV before 2004 there is a very high likely hood that your TV will not work after the transition. If your TV does not have a digital tuner then it will no longer work unless you subscribe to cable, satellite (dish TV or Direct TV), or get a digital converter box.

Digital converter boxes cost about $50 right now and can be purchased for just over $10 if you get one of the government issued converter box coupons. These coupons can be used at most major electronics retailers and allow you to get $40 off the purchase of your dtv converter box.

The DTV transition will allow consumers to get digital TV on for all television stations and will provide them with a few benefits including a better picture, better sound quality, and more programming options.

The initial costs of the transition will be somewhat expensive for consumers but overall I think that the benefits outweigh these, especially since the government will be picking up most of the costs themselves.

For more information about a digital TV converter you can visit the governments http://dtv2009.gov/ website or this TV converter box reviews page.

Different Ways to Receive Digital Television

Currently there are four different ways that will allow you get digital television signals in your home and enjoy the benefits of Digital TV.

The first of these ways to use a digital antenna on a TV with a digital tuner. This is very similar to how we all pick up free over the air television stations with out analog TV. The only difference is that our TV must have a digital tuner in order to pick up digital television signals.

The second way to get digital television is by subscribing to cable. By subscribing to digital cable we can get digital television signals regardless of whether or not our TV has a digital tuner.

The third way to get digital television is by subscribing to satellite. When subscribing you need to specifically request digital satellite. Digital satellite television will allow you to get digital signals.

The fourth and final way to get digital television is by getting a TV converter box for your old analog TV. Getting a digital TV converter box allows you to essentially converter your analog TV into a digital TV. A converter box is a small box that hook into your TV and allows it to function just as if it has its own built in digital tuner.

There are several different ways for you to get digital television on your TV and all of them are simple and easy. I suggest that you go ahead and make the transition to digital TV today so that you can begin enjoying the benefits. If you choose not to do it today you will be forced to do it in about a year when the DTV transition occurs. Why not do it today and begin receiving the benefits immediately?

What is digital television?

Digital television is the sending and receiving of images through a new type of discrete signals. These signals are much less consuming than the older analog signals that were used in the past.

Digital television was first broadcast in the later 1990's and has grown ever since. Digital television was seen by the television industry as a great thing for several reasons. First was that they saw the opportunity to make more money off of it (Damn Corporate Monsters). The second reason was that it would allow consumers to get better picture quality and more programming options.

Digital television will help broadcasters and consumer electronics companies to make more money. Consumer electronics companies will make more money because they will sell a lot of new digital televisions. People will not be able to resist the benefits of digital TV and the result will be the sale of a lot of new televisions. Broadcasters will be able to make more money because of multi-casting. This will allow broadcasters to provide more channels while not using up anymore of the signal spectrum. The result will be more viewers and more advertising dollars.

Digital television is good for consumers because it is allowing many of them to get much better picture and sound quality. Digital television has also afforded them many more programming options through multi casting. Multi casting is only possible through digital signals and allows TV stations to put out more shows at one time. For example, channel 7 might be about to put out different shows on channels 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3.

Digital television was a relatively new technology just a few years ago but it has grown rapidly since its introduction. Currently the grow of digital television is astronomical and will only continue to grow in the future with the governments required switch to digital signals only. In February of 2009 the government will require all television stations to switch over the a 100% digital television signal and will no longer allow analog TV signals. This switch is known as the DTV transition and will require consumers to get a digital TV, cable, satellite, or a digital TV converter box.

In my next post I am going to go over how you can get your own digital TV signal and begin enjoying the benefits of digital TV.
